The pituitary releases TSH in order to stimulate the thyroid to produce thyroid hormones. If the pituitary is suppressed, usually as a result of excess thyroid hormones, contraceptives, or elevated cortisol from stress, it may not secrete proper amounts of TSH. Thyraxis-PT is used in the functional model to support this feedback system.
