As the weather gets colder and flu season is here, there is no better time to rev up your immune system so you too can fight off all those bugs that come around in the winter months. While there are flu shots and anti viral medications available, as many of you know I believe its best to strengthen your body to fight those things off yourself so that you do not come down with the flu in the first place.

I want to start off by first reminding everyone that antibiotics are not the key to everything. Remember, antibiotics can only fight bacterial infections such as certain strains of strep, but they are useless for viral infections like colds and flu. Doctors may sometimes prescribe antibiotics for patients that are ill before testing them, but this can be problematic if you do not need the antibiotics because it only builds resistance to them and can also wreak havoc on the delicate intestinal balance of good and bad bacteria. (For more information on antibiotic use and digestive disturbances please see http://www.completenutritionandwellness.com/ddt.html
There are various nutrients that work great in up- regulating the immune system and can be taken for a few weeks to increase immunity or in larger amounts at the first onset of symptoms to nip it in the bud. Some of you are already familiar with Immunitone Plus, a powerful immune supportive formula which combines herbs that have antiviral and antibacterial properties as well as the ability to maintain Natural Killer (NK) cell activity and cytokine synthesis. This formula is extremely powerful yet safe enough to use in high doses for acute applications, while also being suitable for long- term use in chronic conditions. This formula contains green tea standardized to a very high level of EGCG as well as standardized Echinacea augustifolia, Andrographis paniculata (wonderful for upper respiratory infections), and Goldenseal.
Colostrum is another exceptional nutritional substance, produced by mothers for their newborns, that supports and nourishes the immune system. It provides a perfect combination of immune and growth factors including immunoglobulins, lactoferrin and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), amino acids and other important nutrients. For centuries colostrum has been used by most cultures for healing and wellness. Now with the latest research and technology, quality colostrum can be produced with precision to ensure a pure and potent product. My favorite is Tegricel Colostrum, a novel nutriceutical designed to enhance general immune function and also as a side benefit can help reduce the annoying and sometimes debilitating effects of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), including Crohn's, Celiac and Ulcerative Colitis. It has been suggested to heal and repair damaged tissue from the use of NSAID's such as advil, IB Profin. What makes this Colostrum different is that all Tegricel Colostrum comes from cattle raised in the United States and is produced from happy, healthy, nutritionally-supplemented cows on USDA certified dairy farms. These cattle are carefully fed a scientifically-designed diet that contains the proper balance of legumes and grasses along with trace minerals to ensure consistently high potency colostrum. I recommend colustrum for anyone with weakened immunity and especially if you have gastrointestinal complaints because part of our immune system lies in the gut. It is great to take for 1-2 months to help rebuild the immune response and then have on hand for emergencies.
Vitamin A is another great nutrient and used in the form of retinyl palmitate is great for immune support. Furthermore, this type of vitamin A is even more powerful when taken in mycelized form providing an exceptional delivery system as a water-soluble supplement. Please note that this form of vitamin A is not recommended in high amounts in pregnant women.
Most of us have heard of healing and protective capabilities of vitamin C, but I wanted to mention it here again because dosages and forms are very important and vary in different situations. Vitamin C can come in many forms such as ascorbic acid, ester etc.. My favorite if Ultra Potent C because this patented formula is designed to provide high levels of functional vitamin C in a short period of time. Research suggests that vitamin C in the ultra potent form may result in improved uptake by white blood cells (our immune cells) when compared to regular ascorbic acid. Ultra potent C promotes increased natural killer cell activity and increased white blood cell movement to the site of action. It also contains bioflavamoids for extra protection and is buffered to prevent any potential stomach discomfort. I do not usually recommend that people take vitamin C on a daily basis without testing, as too much vitamin C can lower copper levels. A hair test can help determine what amount if any the body needs daily. However with an onset of a cold or flu, vitamin C can be taken short-term to support the immune system and fight the infection on site. In those situations I recommend taking 3000-5000 mgs of ultra potent C per day for a few days.
I also do not want to leave the subjust of immunity without breifly speaking about flu shots. As many of my patients know, I am not a huge fan of them. Flu shots contain various preservatives with mercury being one of them. This is a very toxic substance and can cause many different effects, especially long-term ones, when too much mercury accumulates in the body. Furthermore, flu shots are not an exact science but merely a speculation of a potential strain of the virus. Many times the actual flu virus is not the same as the strain in the vaccine and it therefore is no help in flu prevention. Raising your natural defenses is the best way to stay healthy this winter and if you happen to catch a bug, make sure you have the above emergency nutrients to take at the first onset of symtoms to minimize the infection.

It's such a pleasure to help those closest to us become happier and healthier. Please forward this newsletter to friends, family members or colleagues who might be interested and inspired by it. If you are sick of yo-yo dieting and want to finally take control of your health please contact us!
